Plaster Wall TV Mounting in Chicago & Chicagoland

Chicago's bungalows, two-flats, greystones and pre-war courtyard buildings are largely plaster over wood lath, and that wall behaves nothing like modern drywall. It's harder, more brittle, and it's built in layers that can separate from each other when they're drilled carelessly.

The failure mode is specific: a fast bit grabs the plaster, spider cracks radiate out from the hole, and the plaster keys behind the lath break loose so the finish sounds hollow long after the TV is up. Once that happens the repair is a plasterer's job, not a dab of spackle.

We drill plaster slowly with the right bit, pilot before we commit, and set fasteners in the actual wood framing behind the lath — never into the lath itself, which cannot carry a television.

What's included

What you get with plaster wall tv mounting

Framing, not lath

Lath will not hold a TV. We find the real studs behind it and anchor there every time.

Crack-conscious drilling

Slow speed, correct bit and pilot holes so the finish coat doesn't spider.

Layered-wall depth

Longer fasteners sized for plaster and lath thickness so full thread reaches the framing.

Irregular stud spacing

Vintage framing isn't reliably 16 on center — we locate and verify rather than assume.

Skim coat and wallpaper care

Careful placement in rooms with original moldings, picture rails and delicate finishes.

Cable options

Old walls sometimes fish beautifully and sometimes not at all; we check before proposing in-wall routing.
